Career prospects with Dr. Belén Nieto-Ortega: Innovation projects in industry
“Career prospects” is a series of talks by IMDEA Nanociencia alumni to give their view of their stay as researchers at IMDEA Nanociencia and their subsequent professional careers, with the objective of providing PhD students a vision for their professional development. The series will be held online in English, and will be open for everyone (no registration required).
Dr. Belén Nieto-Ortega studied at the University of Malaga (Spain) where she obtained her degree in Chemical Engineering in 2009 and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 2014 working on vibrational spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations of chiral conjugated molecules, in Prof. Lopez Navarrete’s group. In 2015, she joined Prof. Emilio M. Perez’s group at IMDEA Nanociencia in Madrid (Spain) as a postdoctoral researcher, developing DFT calculations for interpretation of the electronic structure of carbon nanotubes. Afterwards, she moved at the University of Geneva with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Postdoctoral fellow in Thomas Bürgi’s. There, she worked with chiral gold nanoparticles, studying the nature of the dynamic Sulfur-Au bonds. In 2019, she joined the company DSM as a scientist and optical spectroscopic specialist at R&D Analytics in Kaiseraugst (Switzerland) and since then, she has significantly contributed to different innovation projects and supporting marketing activities.
