  • The COST Action ‘NEXT’ promotes the development and application of non-linear extreme UV to hard X-ray techniques by fostering collaboration among scientists from EU and beyond.
  • Researchers from 20 different countries participated to the meeting.
  • The Action is coordinated from IMDEA Nanociencia.
Instance:

Madrid,18th July 2024. The annual meeting of the newly launched COST Action ‘NEXT’ has been held at IMDEA Nanociencia institute in Madrid, 8-12th July. The main goal of NEXT is to promote the development and application of advanced non-linear extreme ultraviolet (EUV) to X-ray spectroscopic and imaging techniques, enabled by Free Electron Laser (FEL) facilities and lab-based High-order Harmonic Generation (HHG) sources.

next final roundThe WavemiX2024-NEXT Annual Meeting, inaugurated by Prof. Emilio Pérez, executive director at IMDEA Nanociencia, has focused on the latest theoretical and experimental development in the models, generation and application of few-femtosecond and attosecond pulses at FELs and HHG sources, with emphasis on non-linear phenomena. The workshop has served as a catalyst to promote the discussion of novel approaches for the generation of coherent pulses in these spectral ranges and for the implementation of novel schemes of ultrafast non-linear spectroscopy.

The meeting was organized in 18 short scientific sessions, with a special session on “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” by Frauke Logermann, a poster session and 6 round tables. The Best Poster award was given to Francesco Montorsi (Uni. Bologna/MPIP) while the Young Scientist prize was awarded to Dietrich Krebs (DESY). The awards awards were sponsored by Springer Nature thanks to Dr Daniela Guzman. In total, 91 participants from 20 different countries have participated to the meeting.

During the closure of the meeting, Dr Cristian Svetina, chair of the Action, has emphasized that the objectives of the meeting have been met: building bridges between scientists and communities around FEL and HGG facilities, initiating new collaborations, involving theoreticians to extend beyond experimental work and engaging with industry, with several companies in attendance. He also reminded attendees that NEXT funds short scientific missions to perform experiments or collaborations in other research groups (apply here).

The 2025 annual meeting of the network will take place in Vipava, Slovenia, as a satellite event of the Femtochemistry Conference happening in Trieste, 23-27 July 2025.

Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) High-Harmonic Generation (HHG) table-top sources and soft to hard X-ray Free Electron lasers (XFELs) have opened a new era in science, providing ultrashort, coherent and tunable pulses that are currently used to perform cutting edge experiments in Atomic and Molecular physics, condensed matter physics, biology and chemistry. The NEXT COST Action will capitalize on pioneering promising results, reported over the last decade, to create the first concerted experimental and theoretical effort aimed at implementing EUV/X-ray non-linear spectroscopy at table-top HHG and XFEL sources. Europe has a strategic leadership role, with its large number of research groups managing world-class table-top sources and hosting 4-out-of-7 XFELs available worldwide. This Action will have a strong impact on technology supporting the development of novel materials, nanodevices, quantum computing and chemistry, as well as on the training of young scientists as the next generation of researchers that will fully exploit these novel methodologies and tools.

The IMDEA Nanociencia is an interdisciplinary centre dedicated to the exploration of nanoscience and the development of nanotechnology applications in connection with other research institutions and innovative industries. The institute is equipped with 44 laboratories where experts in Physics, Chemistry and Biology carry out cutting-edge experiments at the frontier of knowledge. IMDEA Nanociencia has twice been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Seal of Excellence, in 2017 and in 2021, the highest recognition of excellence at the national level, granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The COST Action ‘NEXT: An international network for Non-linear Extreme Ultraviolet to hard X-ray techniques’ has received funding from the European Union (grant agreement No. CA22148).
