Electroconducting biomaterials / drug therapy to repair the spinal cord

Jorge Collazos Castro (Hospital Nacional de Parapléjicos, Toledo)
Conference hall, IMDEA Nanociencia

Abstract

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a serious medical, social, and economical problem waiting for a solution. Tackling spinal cord damage demands an integrative treatment addressing the multiple pathological features of injuries to achieve neural regeneration. In this context, implantable electroconducting scaffolds may aid neural tissue regrowth when used in combination with pharmacological approaches. The presentation will show the application of electroconducting polymers and carbon microfibers for neural repair, from in vitro studies using cell cultures to in vivo investigations in rodents and pigs. The advances and challenges of the proposed therapy will be discussed together with innovation and commercial opportunities in the field.
